Children's Martial Arts Training in Newcastle City

Help your children develop confidence, skills and fitness to serve them a lifetime.

What does it take to be a champion? Can a martial art support a parent’s instruction?

To excel in any endeavor, individuals need to have a strong set of values and a solid character that gives them the perseverance to achieve his or her goals. The Gracie Barra Kids Program was created to provide children ages 4-15 with an environment that allows them to experience and understand core values like focus, discipline, persistence, cooperation and respect.

As a contact sport, Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu provides a very challenging yet safe and caring environment for a child to mature towards a real-life champion. The outcome of continued childhood practice of GB BJJ goes far beyond the accomplishments on the mats. The discipline and excellence demanded by our instructors often carry over to the child’s behavior at home and at school.

Our Kids Program is subdivided into three different groups to accommodate students of different ages and skill levels:

  • GB Little Champions I (4-6 Years Old),
  • GB Little Champions II (7-10 Years Old)
  • GB Juniors & Teens (11-15 years old).

My 5 year old son got into Jiu Jitsu 1 year ago and we are so glad we picked Gracie Barra. Professor Guga and the team are so professional and caring towards the kids. My son picked up many skills, his balance improved immensely and his listening skills and concentration. If we didn’t leave Newcastle we would have continued. I can not recommend this place enough! We hope to see you all again someday and thank you!

The classes are very organised and well run. They are fun, safe, challenging and engaging. The teachers are passionate and skilled and great role models for kids of all ages. I’m so happy to have found this awesome club

I’ve been taking my kids there for the past month, and decided to take a trial lesson myself. It was a great experience and I’m really looking forward to joining the fundamentals class.

It’s a respectful, welcoming, and motivating environment for anyone that is interested in Jiujitsu.

Our 3 children (as soon as the 4th is old enough she will join too!) absolutely love Gracie Barra and have been members for 18 months. As GB students, their respect for self and community, discipline and skills are always developing and advancing at a rate that continues to surprise me. Professor and coaches are all excellent and the children are inspired to be their best selves under their guidance. We are confident our children will be GB students into adulthood and feel very fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community. I would highly recommend GB to other parents.

GB Newcastle City has a welcoming, friendly, supportive culture at the heart of a very professional martial arts gym. Experienced, responsible, professional instructors lead the team. Professor Guga welcomed my three children who have thrived under his coaching and have made great friends with their peers. My son Zak likes to compete in the BJJ competitions held around Australia and especially values the guidance and technical expertise taught to him. We are proud to be a part of the GB Newcastle City family and highly recommended the club to anyone, adult or child of any age or ability. It will change your life.

This wonderful Doju provides a real sense of family with positive role models that are irreplaceable particularly for the kids classes. The attention to detail, inclusion and care that is given to encourage a fair and warm environment shows even in the members who are there to watch. GB Newcastle are ALL about heart and flexible with a humanistic approach to this sport. Prof Guga is a exemplary leader, hard to find these days.

Our instructors are vetted thoroughly and possess their working with children certificates and have undergone significant training. Many have additional support work qualifications.

Here at Gracie Barra Newcastle City we have a high ratio of Instructors to Students, ensuring your child's safety at all times. Our black belt Professor, Guga, regularly attends kids classes and takes a personal interest in the success of every student.

Why Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu?

Today’s children are faced with many challenges in life from bullying to an unhealthy lifestyle. Jiu-Jitsu classes can be a way for parents to expose their children to an invaluable education (both physical and mental) that sets the basis for their personal growth. Get your kids off the screens and into a worthwhile pass-time. This is not always an easy task, but bring your child in for a free trial and they will see how much fun it is and you will begin seeing the benefits of this activity straight away.

Our Kids Martial Arts Program was carefully designed gathering the experience of more than 20 Gracie Barra black belt instructors teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for kids. It is built to teach kids effective self-defence techniques, improve their physical abilities such as balance and flexibility, stimulate bonding with other kids, and develop their character by applying the lessons they learn on the mats on their daily lives. Our program builds self-confidence, discipline, respect and teaches how to stop bullying from a young age.

Kids learn also get taught through stranger danger and bully exercises that their body is their own, that they can speak up and say when they don't like what someone is doing, that they are allowed to say no and stand up for their personal space. They learn the importance of etiquette in asking if their partner is happy to wrestle and in thanking them after they engage, and as a result, learn about consent and respectful relationships.

"There is no losing in Jiu-Jitsu. You either win or you learn."
