Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Martial Arts for Women

"Jiu Jitsu is my tangible, physical medium for experimenting with all parts of the self"

Emily Kwok

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a rapidly evolving women's sport, in fact in general, female contact sport is now growing at a faster rate than for men. As UFC brings more women to the forefront in martial arts, many women are looking to the craft of Jiu Jitsu as a way to participate in a sport, make themselves stronger and reconnect with their physical abilities.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a fantastic way to keep fit and gain strength. It's a sport that does not rely on strength to be successful, rather learning to problem solve using techniques taught in a structured way. It's a great way to exercise your body and your mind, relieve stress and learn a new skill that will have versatile application throughout your life.

It's a sport where the sky is the limit in terms of competition and more and more women are pushing themselves to continue to reach their potential in this sport right through from white belt all the way up to the black belt.

For those who really like to test themselves, competing in jiu-jitsu is the ultimate!

I gave this school a 5-star rating only because I don’t have the option to give it a higher rating. It is truly a great school with outstanding coaches and an amazing atmosphere for both kids and adults to grow and develop. I highly recommend it.

Gracie Barra Newcastle is the best place for women to learn BJJ in a welcoming environment. I began here in 2021 and have never looked back. A great bunch of women to train with and the guys are awesome. Professors are professional and exceptionally good at what they do. The standard is super high. Culture is great.

SELF DEFENCE

Beyond the sport and fitness aspects of Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu, there are obvious advantages to learning a martial art for self-defense.

Most of our fundamentals classes begin with self-defense drills and all of the techniques have some application in real-life self-defense scenarios. While it is no longer the primary reason women are attracted to martial arts, it is a great added benefit to learning a sport such as this.

Reviews from our Women's Team

Overcoming my nerves and attending my first free trial class at GBNC is hands down the best thing I've ever done. Professor Guga, the coaches and the students are so welcoming, patient, kind and eager to share their knowledge with you. Catering to any age or fitness level, everyone is welcomed & embraced as part of the family from day one. Offering confidence, resilience, strength, community and so much more, I'm so grateful for GBNC and can recommend it for anyone - just bite the bullet and book your free trial, you'll never look back!

You would think you are in Rio de Janeiro with how authentic the Brazilian jiu jitsu is at Newcastle City, thanks to Professor Guga! He makes everyone feel extremely welcome and remembers your name even after just one class. GB Newcastle City is my home away from home. Guga has even inspired me to learn a little bit of Portuguese! Obrigada

Dakota

I'm really enjoying the beginners class, a fun and respectful studio for anyone wanting to give this sport a go, even if you are old and broken like me!

Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Starting BJJ at Gracie Barra Newcastle is one of the best things I have ever done. Professor Guga is truly a master in his work, with Gracie Newcastle exhibiting not only a kind and inviting atmosphere, but also professionalism at its finest. I would strongly encourage any females in particular to give BJJ at Gracie Newcastle a shot, because without a doubt, you will be exposed to one of the best experiences offered in this space.

Hands down the best place to train, you can tell the place is run by authentic lifelong martial artists. Plenty of mat space, clean facilities, and in my opinion the highest level of teaching available in Newcastle.
